Cade wanted to go fishing and it was a day just made for bobber fishing. With Noni and Cade in the boat we floated around on Trout lake and did catch some fish. It was a little hard setting the hook with bobbers with the slip knot set @ 20 feet. We did manage to land a nice Walleye and a bass, but we missed at least a half dozen other bites that we had. A couple weeks ago I spent time fishing with an old friend. Al and I have fished on Eagle lake years before but this was the first time I was ever invited to his cabin or cottage as the Canadians call lake places. The weather was spectacular as you can see from the pictures. Al and I fished hard for lake trout but as all the resorts say on the lake the fishing is tough in the summer. It was!

Jackie and I brought granddaughter Bella back to Minnesota to attend her uncle David's basketball camp in Grand Rapids. Trout Lake is where Zach and I like to bring people out to see big walleyes, and it was a joy to bring my granddaughter Bella out last night. She is very a patient fisherman as she can spend hours on the little pond by her house catching 6" perch and sunnies.

Wednesday after Zach and I traveled to Lake Vermillion to prefish for the City Auto Glass walleye tournament. We fished many parts of the lake for 3 days and found only one spot that produced aggressive fish. Zach found a scattered rock field in Pike Bay with his Humminbird graph's sidefinder display. Along with being able to see the rocks on several passes we saw fish on or around the rocks.

Sorry for the late posting of the opener pictures but its been a busy 2 weeks. The fishing this year was slow and spotty but when we talked to other groups we did alright. With groups fishing in waders and and 3 boats fishing Little and Big Winnie we probably caught 50+ walleyes in 2 days. You can see where many fish on the river. Most of the current moves along the impoundment wall, the water is only 3-4 feet deep but the fish are well camoflaged. Lucky fishermen will see spawning fish as they flash on their sides laying their eggs in the rocks. When you see the females do this and if you look closely there are usually a male fish or two behind the female fertilizing her eggs.

The first fish I landed was a bright female steelhead. This fish was a fresh fish because of the silver color. The longer the fish stay in the river the darker the sides get. This steelie probably came out of the lake within the last day or two.

The Manistique River is a place to fish steelhead, but the scenery is not very picturesque. You park in an old coal yard in town and you fish along a papermill impoundment. The crumbling walls have been cut down to reduce the stress but word has it the walls will be torn down completely.

David caught the only big fish on Sunday. As soon as we started fishing he dropped his jig and caught a 21" eye. He must of hit the fish in the head, because he bearly had time to set his bail on the reel and the fish took off. This fish was 28"+ and weighed over 8 pounds. I made 3 trips to the Rainy river and caught nice fish every time. This was the bonus trip because of the numbers that

I caught this 30" sturgeon on Rainy River last Sunday. It was a great day fishing and DJ and I landed over 50 walleyes. The season on the northern border waters closes on the 15th. If you have time to go up and fish Rainy....DO IT!! It's worth the drive.

This will be the last ice fishing trip of the year. We set up in slushy conditions on 40" of ice. The lake was great but the landings were really bumpy with many deep puddles.

We have a new gas tank system for the Honda generator. The tank on the cooler is syphoned into the generator and you can run for 36 hours without filling....especially nice not to be gassing up the generator in the middle of the night.

We ended up catching about 30 fish a day over the weekend and ate enough fish to satisfy everyone. This monster walleye was released, I didn't measure him but I would say he was almost 6". Unbelievable that he could think that that spoon and minnow could be lunch. Too funny!!

I was amazed to Al out from work and school to go fishing, but miracles do happen. We fished and caught nice walleyes and saugers. I got talked into pheasant hunting in South Dakota this year by Zach my fishing partner. I was a little mixed about going since I hadn't hunted in 20 years. We had great weather with it being sunny every day. The hunting was fair at best with allot of the fields and hunting areas flooded with water and only about 20% of the corn harvested. Having not hunted in about 20 years I actually shot 2 consecutive birds with 2 shots. I wasn't an ace shot but I did down about a half dozen birds, more than I expected.

The number of snow geese that we saw in the 5 days we were there was unimaginable. On this lake alone there were at least 100,000. We saw millions of them in our stay in S.D.

Sunday was too nice of an evening to sit at home so off to Trout Lake I went. The bite wasn't fast or hard but I did manage to catch 8 walleyes and 4 smallies in 4 hours. I was by myself and I forgot how enjoyable it is to do what you want, when you want to do it. I tried to fish the rock reefs on the west side of the lake and caught only small mouths. This one was about 18", the 3 others that I caught were smaller.

Bruce came up this weekend wanting to go fishing. Zach suggested we go to Round Lake and try jig and a minnow. It was a cool morning and it never warmed up. We found fish and had to drift as the waves prevented all trolling, because I didn't want to get wet. Not much of a guide EH Zach. Anyway Bruce caught this 24" eye that was released.

Round lake was rough with a 20 MPH wind. Drifting was the only thing that would work, and a cold day that kept us bundled up. We caught 9 fish and of those we had to release this 20+ " fish.

Zach holds up a fish he helped Griffin land. We put in alot of time trolling on Pokegama and needed to find fish for Griffin. We caught about 8 fish under a bridge deck and this made Griffins day. Along with Z letting him drive his boat, at 47 MPH.
