THE FISHING OPENER....2006

The waiting for the opening of the Minnesota fishing season has come and gone, and except for the weather I think most fishermen had a good weekend. We had some problems in that the water was high and we were limited to where we could fish. The river below the Winnie dam was our choice and we pounded it for 2 days, catching our limits of walleyes. This year we were short Bruce who came down with a bad cold and wisely decided to stay home, the rain and cold would have probably put him in the hospital.

Saturday in the river below the dam was a zoo as you will see from the pictures and the northerns provided enough action so nobody got bored. Mixed in we found enough walleyes to keep you fishing. On Sunday it was a different story, for some reason either the fish moved out of the river or they had lock-jaw. Catching any fish was a chore but we managed to beat the water long enough to catch some nice walleyes while we had the river to ourselves. For our entertainment we watched the antics at the river boat landing. We saw the pros, amateurs and those who should never own a boat. We saw DAM I FORGOT to put the plug in the boat trick, we saw someone throw his minnow bucket over the boat without tying it down, it was a half mile down the river before he realized what happened.

I guess the opener for us and myself is always worth it regardless of the weather conditions, I can always think back and find lasting memories of fish caught or scenes observed. I hope all who fished this weekend had found fish or memories.

The weather will improve and the fishing will get better,
