A Fishing Trip From HELL !!

Monday night Z and I left for Red lake to look for some slabs. The bite has been good so we felt like trying our luck on the big lake. All went well on the trip up and the set up was easy for being 8 in the evening. Once fishing we even caught a few fish before we went to bed. After the lights went out the sh!t hit the fan, the furnace sh!t the bed and all night long I tried different things to stay warm. On one of my many light the ^@#$%^**%^ furnace events I knocked my glasses off and down the ICE hole they went. The only thing we did right was to bring an electric heater with us so with the generator running we were able to keep the house at about 45 degrees. It was a quicky every time you got out of the sleeping bag, you didn't crawl out and think about what needed to be done. Between lighting the furnace and refilling the generator with gas, I slept very little and froze my a$$ off!

BTW the second night wasn't much better but we both said screw it and stayed in the sleeping bags. The fishing was good but not fast, we caught fish all day long and had a couple of doubles each day we fished. I hope you enjoy the pictures. We also played with the video function on my camera and had fun. I can't at the moment get them onto the blog and get them to play. I need some help and I hope eventually they can be played on the blog.

The crappies are beginning to turn on so a trip to Red Lake should be in your future, last year the fishing was so poor everyone thought the slabs were extinct. The numbers may be down but the slabs are around and biting.

Later from one very blind,

Fishing is hard work, just ask Zach. You can only catch so many fish then anyone needs to rest!!

There are some big fish left in Red Lake.

I lost my glasses the first night of the trip and had to have my vexilar within 8" of my face to see what was going on. I had a bobber in the hole next to the 1 I was jigging in and checked on it about every half hour. This 26" eye was hanging on the end of the line as I had to look twice when my bober was below the ice, it was a great excuse-me fish...HEHE!

Z had this double mid afternoon of the first day, WTG Zach!!

Two nice fish for the table, we're having fish for supper!

This was the jumbo crappie of the trip, it was 1 pound 10 ounces and over 15".

Zach found a way to keep catching over the slot eyes. Another fish for recycling.

These were the fish we had by 3 PM of the first day of fishing.

Zach had a rattle reel in the back corner of the fish house that produced fish for 2 days, here's a 15" crappie that found its way into the save bucket.

All the crappies we caught were slabs, we had at least 5 that were in the 15" or larger class.

I went to Red yesterday looking for the crappie action. I did find 2 nice crappies but the walleyes were the biters. I know I caught 8 eyes with only 3 under 17". I'm not writing a text but thought I'd get these pics on the blog. We keep hearing the crappies are biting with some catching limits in a few hours.....Nice to hear I hope to find these frantic slabs just once this year. Trust me I'll keep trying. Later all.

PS...The new beta blog sux!! It's easier to undate doing this...I wish I hadn't updated...Google blew it this time!!

This eye was about 20" and a fighter.

This crappie was almost 15", its hard to tell in this pic but with a little luck these monsters will starting to bite as the season rolls on.

All the eyes caught on Red Lake are fat and healthy looking. They are aggressive also!!

I Did A Little Fishing This Weekend

It was a running week end starting with going up to Red Lake to deliver the generator to Bruce who was taking some friends out fishing for the weekend. So with 3 hours of sleep Mickey picked me up to meet Bruce and to fish for the day. It was a decent day fishing catching 3 crappies and 3 walleyes.

On sunday I got Zach out of bed at 5 AM to go up to Red for the day, after a long evening at HWY 5. He was up on time but was complaining that it was way too early and he needed more sleep. We set up just after sunrise and the bite was only a morning bite, the afternoon was long with no fish moving in our area. We caught 1 crappie, 2 walleyes and 5 perch and I ended up with 2 nice meals of fish. As you head out to the 6 mile area where the crappies are said to be you lose alot of the walleye bite, I guess you have to choose now to try for the slabs and an occasional eye or stay a little shallower and pick up more walleyes.

Whatever, with the mild weather it's still a good day fishing and getting out is the best part of the day.

Catch U all later,

That is a nice keeper Zach, sorry I woke you up at 5 AM though....NOT! It was a fun day, but we under estimated the beer needed for an all day trip.

I caught 1 keeper eye but I was the perch killer, I caught at least 6 of the zebras!!

Zach caught a walleye that was too big and this 14" crappie on Sunday.

On Friday I caught these crappies back to back fishing with Mickey.

Stingy Lake Cabin Update

Well the boys(Zach and Roy) have made alot of progress since the last time I visited their project. Roy was mudding the sheetrock in the master bedroom and Z was sealing the siding. Teka was running from window to window checking to make sure the perimeter was safe...HEHE!! The dog has way too much energy. I gave the guys a break as I stayed about an hour talking fishing rods with Roy and fish house frames with Zach. Too many projects in the fire and we're thinking summer and next winter already!

As you can see from the pics the cabin is looking great and the boys think it should be done sometime in the middle of February. They then kicked me out too much work to do and I was getting in their way.

Enjoy the pictures,

Zach had a production line of sealing the siding to be put up when the weather warms.

All the tongue and groove is in place and the have a stack of siding to put up when the weather gets a little warmer, they refused to do at -10 when I was there. Whimps..they said yesterday the nail gun froze up on them.

Z was looking at the cabinets and picturing the fridge and the stove in place.

The decks are finnished and they have a good start on the siding......Looking like a place to look at if your looking for a cabin.

Some Odds and Ends as in REAR

Fishing is slowing down but a few new and old pics to keep you interested. I went to Winnie with Mickey and caught 2 eyes, the one inside the portable was the nice fish of the evening. I posted a few past trip pics(oldies) that need viewing, they have not been seen and I will catch some flack for putting them on....HEHE! No Problem Roy, we all suffer once in awhile.

I hope everyone was able to fish while the bite was on, but don't let that stop you there is still good fishing to be had. I may get out next week so look for some new stuff. I love the sophisticated terms I get to use whenever I like. Spelling them right ....WHO cares you figure them out. Enough fun for one night....BTW....Pegless cribbage is back and kicking a$$. I'll bet you needed to know that.

Later all,

Steelheader

There is always excitement on a fishing trip and it's not all about fishing. Here Roy's playing hide and go seek!!

Here's a pic from the last trip...a Sunday morning and all felt tired. We fished about another hour or so then pulled the plug.
